Surrey fans, this is for you. County cricket's biggest club is set to get the independent media coverage it demands, when The Rey launches next year.
The new go-to place for reporting on Surrey CCC will provide fresh and erudite writing, from long-form interviews to historical features and informed analysis, as part of the renaissance of digital county coverage in 2026 - all powered by CounterPress.
The Rey will be run by experienced cricket journalists Mark Baldwin, Richard Spiller and Mark Church.
Church has covered all things Surrey cricket since 2002, while Baldwin has regularly reported on Surrey's fortunes for national newspapers and websites since the 1990s.
Spiller, meanwhile, covered the club for more than three decades for the Surrey Advertiser newspaper and contributes to both Wisden Cricketers' Almanack and The Cricketer.
"What we plan to provide for Surrey fans is also, I hope, a small part of the start of a far wider fightback against the sorry and damaging demise of local and regional media in recent years."Richard Spiller, The Rey
Between them, the trio have an extensive contacts book, vast knowledge of Surrey's past and present, and a burning belief in the importance of local media.
At a time when independent regional coverage of such a big club is inexplicably limited, following the closure of the South London Press, The Rey promises much-needed insight into what is happening at The Kia Oval.
Interested fans can sign up to the site's mailing list from December 1, with all those who do receiving an exclusive (and sizeable) discount on membership when The Rey opens its doors for business on February 1.
Baldwin said: “Surrey is the biggest club in English cricket, continually setting standards while also producing a stream of players for the national team. What we plan to provide for Surrey fans is also, I hope, a small part of the start of a far wider fightback against the sorry and damaging demise of local and regional media in recent years.”
Spiller said: “The decline in coverage of domestic cricket in national, regional and local press has left an enormous vacuum for so many people who want to know what's going on at their club. This is a great opportunity to fill that vacuum, focusing not only on what's happening on the field but behind the scenes and in cricket across the county."
And Church added: “I am delighted to be joining Mark and Richard in contributing to The Rey. Surrey is a club that I have a deep affection for, having commentated and reported on them for the BBC for 23 years. To have this opportunity to provide Surrey supporters with different content about the club, the players and its history is an honour.
“The Rey is an exciting new platform for Surrey supporters and I am excited to get started on providing exclusive content that I know the supporters will enjoy.”
The Rey is the fifth county outlet to be announced on CounterPress, as part of the platform's mission to revitalise coverage of England's summer game.
The Hawk, covering Hampshire, is running through the winter while The Chester, covering Durham, will return from its off-season break on March 1.
"If anyone can make an independent outlet work at this historic club, it's these guys."Sam Morshead, CounterPress CEO
Next year, Lancashire supporters will be served by the launch of Lanky Lanky, while From The Sea End will deliver insightful and intelligent reporting on Sussex.
More outlets are due to be announced in the coming weeks, at an exciting time for digital coverage of county cricket.
CounterPress co-founder Sam Morshead said: “The Rey has everything it needs to be the definitive site for Surrey Cricket news, views and analysis from 2026 onwards.
“The two Marks and Richard know the club inside out, and have tremendous enthusiasm for the project. If anyone can make an independent outlet work at this historic club, it's these guys.”
Be a part of change.
